Another Wednesday, With Tomatoes

Go to the Holland Township library to drop off some bags of clothing at the donation shed.
Turn left onto Milford Warren Glen Road / Route 519 and turn into Phillips Farm Market.
Perhaps there is something about Wednesdays. And tomatoes. Granted, the Festomato Festival
was on a Saturday. But the tomato tasting at the Snyder Research Farm was on a Wednesday.
Today is a Wednesday. And here at Phillips Farm Market is table after table of luscious ripe tomatoes.
Basket after basket of cherry tomatoes, both glowing red and golden orbs. If you have ever grown them,
you are well aware that cherry tomato plants produce almost more quickly than you can harvest them.
Plump red tomatoes, just the right size to slice for a sandwich or cut into wedges for a salad.
Summer tomatoes that taste like tomatoes. Succulent, delectable, scrumptious. A world away
from those tasteless tomato-shaped vegetable products that stores offer for sale in winter.

Phillips Farm Market offers heirloom varieties of unique and special tomatoes. Moreover,
because their labels list "Phillips Farms" you know that this where they were grown.
'Pink Delicious' is an award-winning hybrid beefsteak tomato, half a pound to a pound in weight.
It may be lumpy rather than pretty. But what it has is flavor. 'Cherokee Carbon' is a hybrid
tomato developed from a cross of the heirloom varieties 'Cherokee Purple' and 'Carbon'.
Not an heirloom, but a "hyloom." Say what? A hyloom is an F1 hybrid. 'Gin Fizz' pairs
the color and flavor of a Striped German heirloom, perhaps something like 'Marizol Gold'
with the high productivity of modern varieties.
Yellow tomatoes are lower in acid, less sharp in flavor,
offering a sweet, milder flavor than red tomatoes.
They may be small but 'Black Velvet' tomatoes pack a lot of flavor
into their small, round fruits. Another "hyloom" variety.
